The Boxer Uprising was a violent movement by the Chinese people to rid their country of foreigners and foreign influences. More than 1 million people a day were in Tiananmen Square demanding political reform. Party secretary Zhao Ziyang was conciliatory, but the paramount leader, @Deng Xiaoping@@, had already resolved on a crackdown. Martial law was declared on May 20, and the People's Liberation Army was summoned to clear the capital. On the night of June 3-4, PLA units swept into the center of Beijing, clearing Tiananmen Square and killing between 800 and 1,000 civilians in the immediate area.
